Gutter Installation, Step by Step
Gutter installation starts at the roof, not the gutter. We check the fascia, soffit and drip edge first, because a soft fascia board lets a brand-new run sag within one season.
Measurements come next. We map every eave, figure runoff from your actual roof area, and set the pitch so water moves toward the downspout instead of standing in the channel.
- A roofer walks the roof for an inspection, checking the decking and the flashing at the valley, step flashing, pipe flashing and chimney flashing.
- We measure each eave by hand, then size the downspouts from roof area and pitch instead of guessing.
- We tear out the old gutter and its sealant, and drop the debris into a dumpster instead of your flower beds.
- Seamless 5\" and 6\" K-style aluminum is formed on site, so a long run has no mid-span joint that can seep.
- Hangers go into solid fascia with screws; we never trust overdriven nails in plywood or OSB sheathing to carry a loaded gutter.
- We refit drip edge and reseal the counter-flashing where the roofline meets a sidewall or dormer.
- Downspouts run to grade with extensions so runoff leaves the foundation and landscaping alone.
Gutter Installation Materials, and What Drains Into Them
What reaches the channel depends on what sits above it. An architectural shingle roof sheds asphalt granules and grit; a clay tile or concrete tile roof drops heavier debris that clogs an open run fast.
A TPO, EPDM or PVC membrane roof drains differently, and a built-up roof with a parapet and scupper needs the run planned around the coping line and torch-applied modified bitumen details.
- Seamless 5\" and 6\" K-style aluminum is our standard for most single-family homes in Maricopa County.
- Half-round copper suits historic streets in Willo Historic District and Encanto-Palmcroft, where the roofline reads from the sidewalk.
- Leaf guards from lines like LeafFilter and Gutter Helmet keep seed pods and shingle debris out of runs under trees.
- Downspout sizing follows roof area; a choked 2x3 outlet backs up and overflows at the eave during a hard monsoon cell.
- Gutter sealant and caulk at end caps, outlets and miters hold better than roof cement or mastic when surface temperatures climb.
What a Gutter Installation Inspection Looks For
Leaks rarely start in the channel. Water wicks behind the fascia, into the soffit and down the wall cavity, so we inspect the whole assembly before quoting a fix.
- Rot and decay in fascia boards and rafter tails, the first place an overflow shows itself.
- Granule loss and end-of-life wear on asphalt shingles, which tells us how much grit is washing into the run.
- Sag where hangers were spaced too far apart, plus corroded fasteners that have given up.
- Torn underlayment — synthetic underlayment, roofing felt or tar paper that has split at a valley or ridge vent.
- Blocked soffit vents and a tired attic fan pushing attic heat and moisture against the roof deck.
- Eroded soil below an outlet, a sign water is dumping against the slab instead of draining away.
Gutter Installation in Phoenix Heat and Monsoon Hail
Phoenix averages about 111 days a year at or above 100 F, and sustained UV degrades shingles, coatings and underlayments long before anything fails structurally. A coating that flakes at a seam is usually sun damage.
Hail is a real monsoon risk. The 2025 season brought hail to Phoenix and Tempe, with more than 500 homes damaged in Tempe alone, and dented gutters often share a roof with bruised shingle fields.
We work Arcadia, Ahwatukee Foothills, Coronado, Maryvale, Desert Ridge and Sunnyslope, and our trucks run I-10, I-17, Loop 101 and Loop 202 all week.
Gutter Installation Timelines and Cost Drivers
Most single-family runs take a day. A two-story home with a cut-up roofline, or half-round copper, can take two or three days depending on access.
- Linear footage drives price most, since a longer eave line means more material and more hangers.
- Stories and access matter: a second story may need scaffold, and a steep pitch means a safety harness and slower work.
- Fascia repair adds cost when rot has reached the rafter tails or boards must be replaced rather than scraped.
- Leaf protection, copper and oversized downspouts are upgrades that pay back in fewer cleanouts.
